2011 Industry Lifetime Achievement Award
Kim Cooke
Industry Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Four decades on, Kim can definitely be called a veteran of the music industry. He started off at retail with Sam The Record Man in Hamilton, Ontario and shipped tens of thousands of 8 tracks for Muntz in Burlington, Ontario before finding his major label holy grail, WEA Canada (later Warner Music Canada) in 1978 as Atlantic/Elektra Marketing Manager. In this post, he was recognized in 1987 with a Grammy nomination in the Best Historical Album category for his work on The Otis Redding Story.
Kim spent 24 years with Warner later holding the posts of Vice-President, National Promotion and Vice-President, A & R. In the latter position he signed Sarah Slean, Great Big Sea, Paul Brandt, Odds, Big Wreck, Colin James, Natalie MacMaster and more. His last posting at Warner from 1998-2001 was Sr. VP/MD US labels.
All Things Must Pass as the philosopher George Harrison held, and Cooke left Warner in 2001 as that company began a series of transformational changes.
It was a brief respite. In February 2002 he went from the very big to the very small, joining startup Universal-distributed indie imprint MapleMusic Recordings. Drawing on all his prior experiences Cooke served as General Manager, helping sign and develop the careers of Sam Roberts, Kathleen Edwards, Pilate, The Dears, Joel Plaskett, Martha Wainwright and more.
"Launching a new and progressive Canadian-owned label in an increasingly difficult marketplace was a bit like pitching a tent in a hurricane, but the personnel and the philosophies at Maple were the right approach at the right time in the evolution of the music business. I had the time of my life there. "
After 5 ½ in the GM's chair at Maple, Kim launched his own label, Pheromone Recordings, in partnership with his old friends at Maplecore. "It's simultaneously daunting and thrilling to have my name on the marquee but while configurations and business models may change, the core challenge of finding and nurturing talent never does. I'm thrilled to still have my hand in the game."
In early 2009 one of Pheromone's first signings, the Montreal-based multi-genre mashup known as Beast became the label's first gold album, followed by Inuk artist Elisapie Isaac whose album has sold 25,000 copies.
In 2011, with his partners, Kim opened Revolution Recording, a three room state of the art recording in facility in the Leslieville neighborhood, just east of downtown Toronto. Barely open three months, Revolution is already hosting world class recording artists and has been nominated for a prestigious NAMM Tec award, for the new studio design.
Kim also contributes to the music industry in various other ways. He is a past board member of CARAS and is still its Co-chair, Nominating and Voting. He also sits on the board of the Polaris Music Prize.
